We can arrange tours of the Winelands, as well as trips to experience the exceptional regional flora and fauna (e.g. botanical gardens or whale-spotting). This is a great place to start looking. Virtually all restaurants of any significance in the business and tourism areas of South Africa are featured here. The magazine is produced annually and gives annual awards to chefs and restaurants. The online version is readily accessible and constantly updated. A great reference. There is also a complementary publication, Eat In Magazine with its own website where one can find all kinds of information about where to buy the best of high quality food in South Africa.

Jardine at Jordan Winery
Jardines on Bree Street opened its doors in 2006 and was inundated with accolades for its Scottish chef, George Jardine. Sadly it closed earlier this year. However, George had already opened another restaurant at the Jordan Winery in Stellenbosch which has taken his talents to even higher levels. This is a world class spot on the fine dining map but do reserve as far in advance as possible or you will be disappointed. Based on recent visits, in our view, it is currently contesting for the top spot among Cape Restaurants.

Aubergine
A long established restaurant in the Gardens area of Cape Town. The old building has been tastefully brought into the 21st century with a German/Austrian feel while the ambiance and food are constantly being innovated. A serious dining experience. Also try the Cinq-a-Sept experience for a lighter and more affordable experience.

Tokara
Beautiful restaurant in an architecturallly stunning buliding set high on the Helshootge Pass overlooking the valley below. Food is exciting and contemporary. Tokara’s own wines are highly rated though its winelist also carried a fine selection of other wines. It is situated between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

Bosmans at La Grande Roche
The Grande Roche Hotels Bosmans Restaurant in Paarl has been awarded the Best of Award of Excellence 2009 by Wine Spectator for having one of the most outstanding restaurant wine lists in the world for the second year in sucession. This is a gourmet’s paradise and a truly memorable experience. The hotel itself is a beautiful and calm place to stay and enjoy a sumptious breakfast on the veranda in the morning.

Harbour House
Set on the busy and beautiful working harbour of Kalk Bay, 30 minutes from Cape Town, Harbour House is an amazing seafood well worth the short trip. Because of its setting, my own preference is for lunch rather than dinner. It serves the freshest fish and shellfish which are landed on its doorstep. These wonderful ingredients are enhanced but not overshadowed by innovative use of a variety of cooking styles. The wine list is very comprehensive and the final bill will surprise by its value. Enjoy this wonderful experience while the waves crash on the rocks below or, in season, with the Southern Right whales and their pups splashing about in full view. Definitely book ahead at this really popular venue. Afterwards, you can buy some freshly landed fish or shellfish from the fishermen to take home. You can also buy the most fantastic breads at the Olympia Bakery just up the road towards Cape Town on the left – a real gem.

Manna Epicure
A wonderful all white space with great chandeliers at the top end of Kloof St, number 151. Great place for leisurely breakfast, yummy lunch, a selection of teas or coffee and a cupcake. They also do take away breads, cakes and even some interesting and glamorous items for home style. They don’t have their own website but there are lots of interesting reviews on the web.

Buitenverwachting Restaurant
Buitenverwachting Restaurant is part of the Buitenverwachting Wine Estate where we have been regular visitors for several years. We import their wonderful wines into Ireland and they are also available for our guests at Pembroke 403. However, for some reason, we had never eaten at the restaurant until last week. Wow! what a treat. The setting is magnificent looking towards the sloping vineyards. The Maitre’d Etienne and our waitress, Colleen were perfect hosts. The food, oh the food. The pan-fried Vannemei prawns with their own espuma, avocado, daikon, cucumber and spring onion was truly memorable, not to mention the raspberry souffle with lemon verbena ice cream. There is an extensive winelist with all of their own wines being available in beautiful 250ml carafes.Their glassware is also very beautiful. It won’t be our last visit.
